Death Hath Ten Thousand Doors - Altered Book

I found this tortured skeleton graphic on the Web and just had to turn it into an altered book!

It is actually a print made by Alexander Mair circa 1603. I have changed the original titles, which made references to passages from the Bible, to something a little more spooky for Halloween. It reads:

                                                "DEATH HATH TEN THOUSAND DOORS
FOR MEN TO TAKE THEIR EXITS."
                                                                                           by John Webster
(slightly changed from Death Hath Ten Thousand [Several] Doors  For Men To Take Their Exits)

The old book I used had a red line running around the edges so I added a bit of the same coloring with colored pencils. After gluing the graphic to the book I gave it a slight sanding to tone down the very black laser printer ink.

If you'd like the graphic just click on the picture below to be taken to Google docs where you can download and print your own. I've included a few spine titles in various sizes to hopefully match most book sizes.

Have fun!

P.S. Here are the instructions for the book in the background: Dr. Dillman's Encyclopedia

  1. It's fantastic! I may even attempt one myself, despite already being able to predict the end result won't resemble yours in the slightest ... Your display looks great, too!

  6. Thank you for another GREAT download......very generous. And they are fabulous images!! I just finished my first "Bat" book and I am going to start another. I was going to email a picture but then realized I put the cover Bat image on upside down! I spent many minutes gently peeling it off and it is now in the correct position (head down!) and under a press! But taking it off and repositioning it actually made it a little more authentic looking since I couldn't avoid a few torn edges. Crazy about the bat, luckily I decided to come and browse your blog and saw yours and thought, oh, oh.......I also did some apothecary jars and, being in love with Halloween, can't thank you enough for all of the tutorials. I am having so much fun thanks to you!

    1. Thanks Cheryl, I'm tickled that you are having so much fun with the graphics! You are not the only one who put the Bat image on upside down...wink, wink, nod, nod...:) I had to peel off a few of my own! I think that little bat graphic is playing Halloween high jinks on all of us. On the upside, all that peeling and pulling adds to the aged effect, thank goodness. Keep having fun, that's what Halloween is all about☻
